Haney Escapes Loma, Retains Lightweight Titles
In a fight that was billed as a confirmation of Haney's legitimate rule as king of the lightweights, the former titleholder of the division Lomachenko gave the young and bigger fighter a run for his money.
Devin had ruled a portion of this division since 2019 with the WBC belt and collected the other three just last year against hard-nosed fighter George Kambosos Jr, beating him twice convincingly. Vasiliy was a previous two-belt titleholder in the division but lost it in 2020. With the former being in his mid 30s, he looked liked an old lion being fed to the new. The unified champ is only 24 years old.
The fight started out in Haney's favor with the bigger and younger fighter throwing bombs, some of which were clean shots to the body. Loma, who is known to be a slow starter, weathered the storm and came back with some very tight steals in the middle rounds. In the latter rounds, the Ukrainian landed some telling blows to the American, especially in the 10th and the 12th, which closed the scoring gap. Loma appeared to have figured out the champion and he was not afraid to mix it up.
I had it 115-113 for Devin Haney. A lot of the middle rounds were very close. The champion did not win it handily. The challenger had his moments but those spurts were not enough to secure the belts.
Base on the champion's performance tonight, it is time to move to 140. He has outgrown the division. He will get KOed if he fights Davis or Stevenson.
