This movie is A+.
The history, the lore, the life of a real life exorcists, the actors, the story and plot twist is perfect in my opinion.
The abbey housed a great evil which was used as a ground to infiltrate the Church and launched the Spanish Inquisition. The goal of the inquisition was to weed out heretics and convert people to Catholicism but a lot of people were tortured and died. Perhaps, this was the goal of the evil one - revealed to be Asmodeus, to harvest a lot of souls. He had possessed a powerful exorcist and used him for his goals.
In modern times, this evil planned to infiltrate the Church through the Pope's personal exorcist - Gabriele Amorth. Imagine the damage he would have done if he succeeded in today's time.
The movie has shown good qualities and values - like the love of a mother to his son is next to love of God and faith in God and in the Church.
