In what was a bruising, highly entertaining encounter between two champion, high-caliber fighters, Caleb Plant (22-2) survives the "Mexican Monster" in David Benavidez (27-0) in a WBC interim world title match.
Caleb had earlier success in the first few rounds with his box and grab strategy, peppering the stalking Mexican-American with combination punching and then clinching when the action got into close quarters. Benavidez picked up the pace in the middle rounds after landing some heavy punches that battered the American. It was evident that David was just too strong, too big with Plant's punches not offering serious damage. He reminds me of a welterweight version of Antonio Margarito - he just keeps going forward and throwing bombs. Despite absorbing a heavy beating, Caleb Plant, blood on his face, stood his ground to finish the fight.
An explosive matchup awaits with Saul Alvarez vs David Benavidez - potentially in September! Will Canelo box and move or will he exchange bombs? One thing is for sure, David is fighting one way and that is going forward like the bull that he is. It will be fireworks come Mexican Indepedence Day!
My score: 116-112 for David Benavidez
