Figueroa Beats Magsayo, To Fight Vargas for Featherweight WBC Title

Brandon 'The Heartbreak Kid' Figueroa (24-1, 18 KOs) hands Mark 'Magnifico' Magsayo (24-2, 16 KOs) his second straight defeat as he cruised to a surprising unanimous decision win. In a fight that had the makings of a classic firefight, the two come-forward boxers had a lot of pushing, clinching, and rabbit punching, especially from Brandon. I had the fight 115-111 to Figueroa, in what was a close fight. The two-point deductions is unusual for a title-eliminator but it had no effect in the official results.

Figueroa is a deceptive fighter at 126. He is big, he has reach but he loves to fight in the inside. He has a solid chin but is not a power puncher, more of a volume puncher. Magsayo's game plan probably would be to time Brandon once he comes forward. He had no answer to the Texan's rabbit punching while on the clinch and the pushing/wrestling. All these actions can take a tool on your stamina.

What's next for Magsayo? Take a long break and recharge. Get some tune-ups to build that confidence. He is young and can definitely bounce back. As for Brandon, he should face Vargas in what will be an interesting fight because the Mexican loves to fight on the outside while Brandon loves to go in the inside.
