The Department of Finance is working overtime to remind taxpayers to file their income tax returns (ITRs) regularly after the Commission on Elections said failure to do so isn’t a crime.
Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III has ordered his staff to put together a public briefer on tax laws to counter the impression among netizens that they don’t need to file and pay their taxes because Bongbong Marcos was allowed to run even if he refused to file ITRs for 4 years.
“According to the 1997 National Internal Revenue Code (Tax Code), not filing your required tax returns is a CRIME!,” the DOF said in a Facebook post.
Violators are fined P10,000 or more along with 1 to 10 years in jail.
The non-filing of tax returns is punished by law since 1939, the DOF said, contrary to Comelec Commissioner Aimee Ferolino’s controversial claim that Marcos did not commit an immoral act with no law punishing his non-filing of ITRs.
“INCOME TAX FILING SEASON IS UPON US! Let us do our share in contributing to our country’s recovery and growth by declaring and paying the proper taxes. File early to avoid long queues,” the agency added.
