Key points of Isko's interview
1. Mining - pagtibayin ang mining; responsible mining, no backyard mining; generate FDIs for jobs, income; accept mining money as long as its legal; clear cut rules for everyone
*Did not answer the question on open pit minining
Boy: "You will also allow open pit mining katulad ng sinabi ng DENR"
Isko: "The mining, it has to be an industry. Hindi yan pwede tayong mag backyard ng mag backyard at maging iresponsable na lamang."
*Good point on creating a supply chain
Isko: "Get the ore, and i think we should come up with a plant, producing steel, that creates other jobs.
2. COVID 19 - be prepared and acquire medicines, oxygens, facilities, frontliners, treat COVID as an endemic; approach scientifically; open for business; we always think ahead; copied British approach; invest in our scientists to create our own medicine;
"We can learn how to live with COVID 19 and go back to work safely. That is our approach in Manila and that is the approach I am going to do in the entire country."
3. Poverty - prioritized housing to create jobs (through labor, materials, etc), stimulate economy to create opportunity; mininum basic needs; address housing, education, healthcare, and jobs; cites examples as a mayor; cancelled pending projects for feeding program
4. OFWS - generate FDIs, create opportunities; too much bureaucracy; simplify process for business; put professional people; create jobs here
5. Social Media/Pornography - talk to children and be reasonable as a parent; make social media companies accountable; blocking IP address of websites;
*Blocking websites probably is undemocratic or contentious.
6. Abortion - life is life; equal chance, equal opportunity;
"There is a life inside the womb. Life is life."
"Yan yung buhay natin. Hindi ko ginusto maging basurero. Hindi ko ginusto kumain ng tira ng tao. Bat yan yung pinagkaloob sakin ng tadhana. Ipinilit kong magsigasig, ipinilit kong ibangon ang sarili ko, ipinilit kong pagbutihin ang sarili na makilala ako ng lipunan na maayos na tao."
7. Drugs - cites examples on what he did in Manila; cites experience growing up with criminals;
"But the thing is, one thing I found, bulk na dumarating dito (drugs). So there must be something wrong with our borders."
8. Debt - nothing wrong with borrowing to stimulate the economy; cites example of US being the #1 debtor; dispose non performing asset for debt servicing; attract FDIs; be more competitive like costs of electricity, etc; rules based approach for investment for trust and transparency
*I think we cannot follow the US model for debt. We are not a tech and manufacturing country. We are mainly an agricultural and service-oriented economy. Plus, we barely have an elbow room because of Duterte's heavy borrowing.
9. West Philippine Sea - appoint a navy for chief of defense; it is ours base on ruling, ancient maps; ask help from allies;
*He mentions UN for help. But it's more complex than that. The UN is powerless. It's best to approach Aus, Jpn, Ind, Sokor, US, and ASEAN to deal with the WPS issue (multilateral, not bilateral). Improve credibile defense posture while maintaining diplomatic channels to maintain status quo but still enforcing our claims.
10. Presidential requirements - it's up to the people; they can choose;
"what we should go after is paano natin gagawin mas mature yung ating mamayan sa pagsisiyat sa ating mga kandidato or pano tayo magigiing responsabiling mamayan sa pagpili."
"Yung prohiba is a very good qualification of any candidate because you can dream of so many things, you can think of so many things... these are what you call lip service. But wala kang karanasan... then how can you relate? You can always choose words, you can sugarcoat things... but wala yun. At the end of the day, where were you." - Probably a veiled attack on BBM during this portion of the interview.
P.S.
Very different from Leni's interview. Tito Boy says "go ahead" and "sorry" when he interrupted.
Overall, he is a capable leader on the local level no doubt but how he maneuvers national politics remains to be suspect.
